When is a leaflet not a leaflet?
Various dictionaries describe leaflets as –
A printed, usually folded handbill or flier intended for free distribution.
- A pamphlet or circular for mass distribution.
- Addressed or distributed to a large number of persons.
- A printed advertisement, directive, or notice intended for mass distribution.
Leaflets & flyers are really one in the same document and are generally considered the poor cousin to a brochure.
On most occasions leaflets & flyers are printed in 1 or 2 colours with some being photocopied if only a small quantity is required.
Many people use them to kick off a cottage industry. In this situation they are usually designed and produced at home, possibly on inkjet desk printers, and distributed around the local area.
The unit cost for a leaflet or flyer produced in this manner is quite high but due to the small quantities usually involved, the overall cost is low.
For larger commercial quantities leaflets & flyers are printed on commercial presses and distributed by a mailing house or fulfilment company.
The size of leaflets & flyers usually varies from A6 up to A3 max and the stock normally used is generally on the cheaper side. Non coated stocks similar to copy paper are the most popular with some using a bright coloured paper to attract attention.
